Un documental sobre OLPC – “Una Computadora Por Niño”
Publicado: 18/02/2012 Archivado en: Uncategorized | Tags: olpc, sugar Deja un comentario »La serie televisiva “26 personas para salvar el mundo” transmitida y producida por el canal Infinito, ha dedicado un capítulo entero a documentar algunas de las experiencias del proyecto OLPC (One Laptop Per Child).
Los protagonistas:
OLPC: Es un proyecto revolucionario, originado en el año 2005 por catedráticos del MIT con el objetivo de crear una computadora portátil para niños con el propósito de ser usada en la educación. En un inicio se planteó desarrollarla a un precio de $100, sin embargo el costo se incremento alrededor de los $180 siendo aún extremadamente bajo comparado con los precios del mercado.
Esta iniciativa origina la laptop XO, famosa por su diseño y a la vez por su sistema operativo, utilizando una versión adaptada de Fedora (sistema Linux) y una peculiar interfaz gráfica llamada Sugar, la cual ha sido diseñada para ser simple e intuitiva para los niños.
El proyecto ha sido implementado por varias ONGs alrededor del mundo. En Nicaragua el proyecto está siendo desarrollado por la Fundación Zamora Terán, teniendo presencia en todos los departamentos del país. En las próximas semanas se entregarán 5,000 computadoras en la isla de Ometepe.
Plan Ceibal: Es el primer proyecto gubernamental que se encarga de entregar una computadora XO a cada niño en edad escolar y a cada maestro de escuela pública en Uruguay. Se lleva a cabo desde 2007.
MIT Media Lab: Es un laboratorio del MIT dedicado a la investigación y diseño de nueva tecnología.
26 personas para salvar el mundo: La descripción de la serie producida por el canal infinito es la siguiente:
“Jorge Lanata, partirá del descubrimiento de un texto de época según el cual se necesitan 26 personas para salvar el mundo y recorrerá los cinco continentes hasta encontrarlas y descubrir lo que las hace merecedoras de su rol.”
El argumento:
En esta ocasión Lanata llega al Massachusetts Institute of Technology para entrevistar al “Inventor”, Nicholás Negoponte, fundador del proyecto OLPC. El capítulo relata la experiencia de Nepal y Uruguay en la implementación del proyecto, en un acercamiento a directivos, profesores y niños, mientras que Negroponte comparte su opinión acerca de la situación de la educación y el origen de su fundación.
Como dato interesante, Lanata entrevista al escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano.
Removing unnecessary package from olpc image F14
Publicado: 11/07/2011 Archivado en: OLPC, Uncategorized | Tags: fedora, olpc Deja un comentario »Since the upgrade of the OS for OLPC based on F11 to F14 the image is a lot bigger than before, due the continuous growing of this distribution. Some packages aren’t useful for the project and some of them have a big size, for example java that nothing in the system use it.
I started the task to find some of this big packages, I wrote a shell script to get a sorted list about all the rpms installed in a XO and it found one, mesa-dri-drivers unnecessary for the XO and with 41.83mb. It was included automatically using olpc-os-builder, the utility for create OS images, but on the test based on F15 it was pulled out.
The reason? In F14 mesa-dri-drivers was required as a dependency of mesa-libGL, but since the version 7.10-0.10 (F15) it doesn’t require it anymore and lets comps do it.
The solution? Hack the actual image, that was acceptable because in the next version (F15) this package doesn’t go to included automatically due the changes on the own rpm.
I wrote a patch for this issue and it seems that will be incluided in the next release 11.3.0. Besides this is my first patch for the sugar/olpc project and I hope keep working, thanks all of community members that helped me, specially to dsd.

Sugar news in Nicaragua

I was focused to inprove three activities developed by Nicaraguan volunteers, one by my own.

I’m proud about the knowledge that I’ve got, and I hope keeping developing for Sugar, and Free Software in general.
About The Course
My friend Marcelo said “the course was never boring”, and it is true, It was a really nice experience. The teacher Fitoria had a good level, and a nice method for teach the python programing art. The people was always cool, and the environment was all the nights very nice. In fact, we could watch the Argentina – Alemania game in the Football World Cup, thank you Gema .
About Calendario
It’s a simple calendar for the Sugar environment, the software plataform based on Fedora that run the XO, the funny green computer by the project “One Laptop Per Child”
It allow the feature to add/remove diaries to-do and a block for ephemeris. It’s work very simple, It’s very easy for a child to create and delete content. Also it would be usefull for a teacher either other person that needs an agenda in Sugar.
I’ll write in the future about the tecnical details, and some links to download and colaborate. Special thanks to Pedro Vuskovic, wish helped me to design the icons.
